Hi Maggie-sensei! This is a pretty random question so sorry to bug you, but in my Japanese textbook, there is the phrase:

毎日の生活を大切しない人は人生を大切にしない人だ

I can’t for the life of me work out the English translation. Something like “the unimportant people in everyday life are human life’s unimportant people”? But the placement particles ‘wo’ and ‘ni’ confuse me and make me think this may be wrong. Thank you in advance for your help >.<

  OK, let’s break it down.
  を is an object marker. And 大切にする is a verb.
  
  *(object) を大切にする= to regard ~ / to care about ~ / to respect~
  *(object) を大切にしない= to disregard ~ / not to care about ~ / to disrespect 〜
  In this case the objects are 毎日の生活= one’s daily life and 人生= one’s life
  
  *”毎日の生活を大切にしない”人= People “who don’t care about/respect/regard their daily life/ everyday life”
  *は = subject marker = are
  *”人生を大切にしない”人＝people “who don’t care about care about/respect/regard their life”.

こんばんは、先生！

すみません。。。I have two questions that confuse me a lot…

In this sentence:

ひらがなは書けますが、漢字は書けません。(from a text book)

(1) The verb かけます – is this 已然形/仮定形? “It indicates that something is already the case, or is in the process of happening” ??
From my text book, it says that it means “可能(かのう)”
I don’t understand…

(2) Why do we use は but not が? or even を？
I always thought は indicates the subject and が indicates the object…(obviously it’s highly likely that I’m wrong)
Here, it sounds to me like “Hiragana writes…”? Or is it because of the special verb form?

@.@” Confused…

  However I am still confused regarding (2).
  
  (A) ひらがなは書けますが、漢字は書けません。
  (B) ひらがなが書けますが、漢字が書けません。

  1) The dictionary is right. They are not 已然形/仮定形.
  There are the verb form called 可能動詞 (Potential verbs)
  
  ●書く(to write)→(potential verb form) 書ける／書けます (to be able to write)
  ●読む(to read) →(potential verb form) 読める／読めます(to be able to read)
  ●食べる(to eat) →(potential verb form) 食べれる／食べれます (to be able to eat)
  
  2) は…は….
  This is a very common way to show the contrast between two things.
  
  Ex. マギーは女の子だけれどもマックスは男の子です。
  = Maggie is a girl but Max is a boy.
  
  Ex. 野菜は嫌いだけれどもお肉は好きです。
  = I don’t like vegetables but I like meat.
  
  Your question :
  ひらがなが書けますが、漢字が書けません。
  It doesn’t sound natural.
  Some people might say
  ひらがなは書けますが、漢字がかけません。(emphasizing kanji more.)
  But still, as I mentioned above, it is more common to use は〜は to show the contrast between two things.
  
  I know the difference between は and が are hard but the simplest explanation is
  while は is used when you focuses on the topic of a sentence / what comes after it が is used when you focus on the subject of a sentence/ what comes before it.

You say this when you deny what you have just heard is not true.

= zenzen futotte inai.
= Not fat at all

= Iya nanka sono kami wo sa (2) nakushichatta rashikute
